O CANADA 🇨🇦 Instagram tells me most of you are American, so in keeping with my little #CanadaDay tradition, here are some fun facts about my homeland that come to mind today… • 1️⃣ The California sushi roll was invented in British Columbia! 🍱 • 2️⃣ Canadians take their shoes off when they enter their (or anyone else’s) homes. There are exceptions of course, but I’m always in awe of how Americans just walk into each others’ homes with their outdoor shoes on their feet! 👞 • 3️⃣ Canada consumes more Kraft Mac and Cheese than any other country in the world. I legit have some in the pantry right now and always buy some when I’m traveling for singing gigs. Also, we call it Kraft Dinner or “KD” as that’s what it’s called on the box (versus “Kraft Mac and Cheese” in the US). I actually don’t know a single Canadian who would call it macaroni and cheese. • 4️⃣ Canadians love pointing out other Canadians being Canadian. eg: “My friend was on Jeopardy.” “Alex Trebek is Canadian!” or “Do you watch #HandmaidsTale?“ “Margaret Atwood’s Canadian!” or “That’s ironic.” “Alanis Morissette is Canadian!” • 5️⃣ The country’s official phone number is easy to remember: 1-800-O-CANADA 🤗 • 6️⃣ You haven’t lived if you haven’t had poutine. And none of this mozzarella crap—it HAS to be squeaky cheese curds. (@machinelevine doesn’t get this one. He calls it the single most overrated food in Canada! You have my permission to attack him in the comments.) • 7️⃣ The border between Canada and the US is the longest demilitarized border in the world. I love this one. 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸 • 8️⃣ Pennies have been phased out! When paying cash you round to the nearest 5 cents, so whether your total is $2.98 or $3.02, you’ll owe $3.00. This change was implemented after I moved away so it always catches me off guard when I travel back home. • 9️⃣ I legit didn’t know table syrup existed until I first visited the States as a kid. I ordered pancakes and practically spat out my first bite in horror. Maple syrup or bust! (Vermont gets it.) 🍁 • 🔟 “Eh” is listed in the Canadian Oxford Dictionary as a valid word. SO THERE. • Have any to add? Any surprise you? #HappyCanadaDay friends! 🇨🇦😘
